Where to Begin: Clarify Your Baja Vision
Making the decision to move to Baja Sur is more than just a change of scenery— it’s a shift in how you want to live. Before you get too caught up in beachfront daydreams, let’s take a moment to map out what really matters to you. Slow it down and get really clear on what your Baja life actually looks like. This isn’t just about making a move— it’s about reshaping your lifestyle and making sure your investment lines up with the way you truly want to live.
When my family and I moved to Baja Sur almost six years ago, it wasn’t part of some long-term master plan. A friend had recommended Todos Santos, and we decided to give it a shot— just for a year. We came with no big expectations, thinking it would be a fun break and a chance to reset. We had originally been considering small towns in Europe— places where our kids could grow up bilingual, with access to culture, walkability, and a slower pace of life. Baja was a complete surprise — in the best way. In Todos Santos, we found everything we’d been searching for: access to nature, a strong sense of community, and a simple, grounded way of life. It gave us all we’d hoped for and more, with the added bonus of being close to our work in the U.S. and just a short trip from extended family.
Todos Santos had the charm we were looking for— like a small Spanish village— but at a much more accessible price. We loved that we could drive down in our own car, stay connected to work without hassle, and easily catch quick, affordable flights back to the U.S. when needed. It gave us the freedom to build a new life without losing touch with the old one.
And then there’s the lifestyle — the part that makes it all worth it.
We live in a place where the roads are still unpaved and bumpy— and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Raising kids here is so much calmer, easier (and cheaper at times!) I always joke it’s like living in the US back in the ’80s. My kids are surrounded every day by different cultures and languages, which is shaping their understanding of the world in a way that’s broad and inclusive. Their school, Tierra Madre Colectivo Educativo, is a small, nurturing, bilingual community where they get way more attention than they ever would in a big city. Plus, we don’t spend hours driving across Denver just for a playdate—everyone is close by and easy to get to!
That mix of charm, culture, and connection is what made us stay — and it’s still very much alive in Todos Santos, Cerritos and El Pescadero. From street tacos to surf breaks, artisan markets to real community, this place has a rhythm all its own. And now it’s your turn to imagine what life here could look like for you. A location change is one thing, but to somewhere that inspires a reshaping of your lifestyle, pace, and priorities? That's something else.
So if you’re thinking about making a move — whether it’s full-time, part-time, or just an investment for now — let’s make sure your vision is aligned with the life you actually want to build.
Start by getting clear on what matters most to you. Are you looking for more freedom, connection with nature, or a slower pace of life? Do you want to work remotely, generate rental income, or create a home base for your family to unplug and reconnect?
Consider how you really want your days to feel. What kind of neighborhood or town suits you? Do you see yourself walking to cafes and the beach, or tucked away on a quiet hilltop with space to breathe? Think about what amenities are non-negotiable— like reliable internet, school options, or being close to an airport. It’s also important to think about which variables are negotiable, and more open to flexibility.
Also, take time to define your budget and timeline. Are you buying land to build in a few years? Or ready to buy a turnkey home in the next six months? And if you're not sure yet— that's okay too. Starting with a vision will help you make smarter, more aligned decisions as you move forward.
This is exactly the kind of thinking I love helping my clients with— working through all the little things it took me a while to learn when we first moved here.
